Cool game, it is hard!

I thinks this works as a parody.

You should revise grammar. Try to use only the I pronoun. It is confusing that sometimes James, the Banana, uses we to refer to himself. Also, try improving the background and platform art.

I like the smooth menus. You should try using checks instead of using different maps. The typeface selected does not look good with the pixel style graphics.

I like the GBC-style graphics. Although, the typeface (which is not pixel-perfect) does contrast negatively with the rest of the art style.

I enjoyed the aspects of the game, it has a very relaxing vibe to it.

Thanks, and I definitely understand what you mean there. I plan to straight up make my own typeface for the future game that fits a little better.

The control scheme used in the game is not standard. For example, the game uses j for jumping instead of the expected key, space. The art style looks a little bit unpolished, the colors especially do not look very real.

Hi, I like the art in the game and the story idea is quite funny! Yet I find that the game is not very good at explaining your goal or how to achieve it. Is the player against the foxes? Is the player supposed to destroy as much as the city as possible? If so why? For a high-score? Also, how? The controls do not seem to be explained inside the game.

Finally, I would include a crosshairs.

VerilyFine responds:

Thanks for the feedback, those are things I want to address in a future update. Except for the controls, those are already taught in the intro.

This is a review of the downloadable version of the game available in itch.io

Starting the game was very difficult. The instructions say that you can jump with Space (A) and that you move with A/D, yet in the start menu, other buttons are also available like W and S. I tried several keys for starting the game: enter, q, e, z among others, which are the usual keys associated with the WASD movement scheme. Non of the keys worked. I finally tried to use the jump button (Space) and it did work. The game should communicate its instructions in a simple and understandable way.

Regarding the game itself, I welcomed the charge bar when preparing a jump. You do have to get used to this jumping mechanic. I think that a first room that better instructs the player on how to jump would be better. For example, the first room could include three parts: a first part that lets the player walk back and forth until he reaches a small tower or some other protrusion that he must overcome by charging the jump, followed by a well located chasm that the player must avoid by jumping over it with a well timed jump.

The visuals and music of the game are fine and I do not have anything special to comment on them. The white outline of the character feels a little out of place, but because all the coins have also have it I think it is fine.

Thank you so much for taking your time to write a review!

I totally agree with you that the beginning could use an iteration to improve how the game is introduced to the player.
